How to Create Multiple Folders Using a Batch Script (the Manual Way)

Before building this app, we used to do it the hard way โ€” and you still can. Windows lets you create multiple folders with the md command in Command Prompt:

md "Folder1" "Folder2" "Folder3"

For folder names stored in a text file (one per line), a batch script with a FOR loop works:

for /f "usebackq delims=" %%i in ("names.txt") do md "%%i"

This works, but it has real drawbacks: you must first export your Excel column to a plain text file, the script breaks on special characters like & or trailing spaces, there is no preview, no duplicate handling, and no report โ€” one typo and you get a mess of wrong folders. That is exactly why we built Bulk Folder Creator: it does the same job directly from your Excel file, with a preview, safe name cleaning and a full CSV log. If you create folders more than once a month, the app pays for itself immediately โ€” and it costs nothing.

Who Is It For?

Anyone who manages files at scale: schools and examination centres (one folder per student roll number), HR and admin teams (per-employee document folders), photographers and studios (per-client or per-event folders), accountants (per-company financial-year folders), and project offices (per-site or per-job folder trees using sub-folder mode).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create multiple folders at once from an Excel list?
Put your folder names in one Excel column, open Bulk Folder Creator, select the file, sheet and column, choose a destination folder and click Create Folders. Hundreds of folders are created in seconds, with a CSV report of the result.
Is Bulk Folder Creator free?
Yes โ€” completely free, with no trial period, registration, watermark or locked features. Download it from the official GoAndUse release above.
Does it support old .xls files or only .xlsx?
Both. It reads modern .xlsx files and legacy .xls files (Excel 97 and later), so it works with exports from older office software too.
Can it create nested sub-folders?
Yes. Turn on sub-folder mode and write paths like Batch/2026/A in your Excel cells โ€” the app creates the full nested structure automatically.
What happens if a folder already exists?
It is skipped, never overwritten, and marked as "Skipped" in the CSV report. Your existing files are always safe.
What about invalid characters in folder names?
Characters Windows does not allow (like ? * : < > |) are automatically replaced, trailing dots and spaces are removed, and reserved names (CON, PRN, etc.) are adjusted โ€” so any Excel data works without crashing.
Is it better than a batch script?
A batch script works for simple lists, but it needs a text file, breaks on special characters, and gives no preview or report. Bulk Folder Creator reads Excel directly, previews everything first, cleans names safely and logs every result โ€” with zero command-line knowledge needed.
Does it work on Windows 7?
Yes. Download the 32-bit version and install Microsoft's free vc_redist.x86.exe component once โ€” it runs on Windows 7 and older 32-bit office PCs.
